Oliver is 4 years old and came to Boston Buddies from a local shelter. He is an absolute sweetheart and sat on our volunteer's lap all the way from the shelter to the vet. We have discovered that Oliver does not care for cats or other dogs and he needs to be in an only animal in his furever home. Poor Oliver was quite anxious after leaving the vet and arriving at our cage free boarding facility. This is a common reaction for some dogs after being pulled from a shelter and placed in an excitable dog environment like a boarding facility. We hoped he would do okay in a foster home that had only cats, but sadly it was not to be. It is obvious he needed some one on one TLC. Since being in his foster home for a while we've learned a few things about our Oliver. For one thing, once he's comfortable in his environment he is a total doll and so very handsome! He is 20lbs which makes him the perfect sized pal to snuggle up on your couch with and watch your favorite movie. It's very apparent that Oliver is longing for and absolutely loves human attention and affection. His foster family says when they get home from work Ollie is nothing but jumping, wiggles and licks, and a routine has developed that includes a frantic search for wherever he last hid his bone. Ollie loves to bring his bone to them tauntingly, trying to lure them into a game of tug of war - and they always take the bait! Some of Ollie's favorite things include re-hiding his bones throughout the day, attacking his stuffed squirrel, looking out the window to regulate the neighborhood (this does continue to be a work in progress as Mr. Oliver loves to bark at everyone) and earning his treats in his toy that has different hidden compartments. He also loves to go on walks although Oliver seems to pick and choose who is threatening and continues to work himself up into a loud, aggressive state at times. His foster family just keep him moving and he calms back down. Oliver is still learning how to socialize with other doggies and people. While he gives us lots of kisses and snuggles once he's comfy, new people are still scary and Oliver reverts to barking and growling. On several occasions, family members who met Oliver encountered a snarly and intimidating Oliver. However, once he calms down and everyone sits still, Oliver will obey the sit command. Then, new people can give him a treat and within minutes he is comfortable with them. Oliver goes on lots of walks, and occasionally jogs to help burn off anxious energy. Recently, Oliver went to the dog park at night when it was empty and was able to run freely, and wow, did he run! Oliver was frolicking all over the park happily. The next day, he seemed to be a bit calmer and less prone to barking. This is a great sign! An animal behaviorist is scheduled to meet with and Oliver to help assess his behavior and any beneficial work that can be done to ensure he is the happiest, most balanced Oliver he can be. For now, his foster family is very proud of how far he has come and they can't wait to learn more ways to help him be the goofball he is! Ollie has been neutered, micro chipped, heart worm and fecal tested (both negative), and he is up to date on vaccinations. The vet discovered that Oliver has crystals in his urine and he is now on a special diet to try and fix this issue. He is also hypothyroid which is easily treated with medication.
